History of Indigoidine

A naturally occurring blue pigment now called indigoidine, 135 years in the making, now accessible through biotechnology – and it’s history.

HISTORY

1890

Microbes that produce a blue pigment were discovered and investigated by a German Chemist, Claessen

1939

The blue pigment was isolated and investigated by another chemist and named indigoicine. The structure remained unknown still.

1965

The chemical structure of indigoidine was discovered after multiple years of study by Richard Kuhn. Making the pigment remained challenging since it is produced at low yields by natural microbes.

2002

The genes responsible for indigoidine biosynthesis were discovered, showing the natural production pathway of indigoidine for the first time

2012

The first genetically modified organism makes indigoicine.

2019

Multiple organisms have been engineered to make indigoine by academic labs. The product is nearly ready for a commercial application.

Now

Shreenika launches an industrial process for affordable indigoidine for the masses.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

INDIGOIDINE is a vibrant blue natural pigment made by microbial fermentation from sugar. Available for the first time from Shreenika, INDIGOIDINE has high color intensity and good stability that make it a leading alternative to conventional blue colorants. INDIGOIDINE is a natural microbial product, with good biodegradability and environmental footprint, in addition to excellent colorant properties for textiles and materials.

WHY INDIGOIDINE?

INDIGOIDINE is the world’s most cost-effective natural blue colorant, and we are the world’s leader in this molecule. Natural indigoidine has a much a much lower cost in use than biotech indigo or any other natural blue. We aim to make our product reach cost parity with most synthetic blues by Q2 2025 and can offer very competitive pricing.

INDIGOIDINE is color fast and stable in many formulations, with good pH tolerance between 3-7, outcompeting all natural and even some synthetic blues in stability assays.

INDIGOIDINE is simple to formulate with, as it can be blended into many formulations as a blue powder. We can pre-disperse indigoidine into many surfactant systems and blends to make formulation simpler for end-users as needed.

Color intensity of INDIGOIDINE is extremely high, comparable to synthetic blues commonly used.

Made from sugar through a cutting-edge precision fermentation process, INDIGOIDINE presents a new opportunity for product manufacturers to meet sustainability, sourcing, and performance requirements of a modern consumer friendly product.

FORMULATION

As a pure crystalline product, INDIGOIDINE doesn’t contain any preservative. INDIGOIDINE is free of specified pathogens. The number of non-pathogenic microorganisms with less than 100 CFU per g of INDIGOIDINE meets the CTFA microbiology guidelines.
SAFETY AND ECOLOGY
Standard and well-defined safety testing is being performed on INDIGOIDINE to prove the product to be safe for general use. The current data available does not indicate any environmental or safety risk. Regulatory filings are ongoing to launch our product for sales into any geography with TSCA and REACH registration underway.
PROCESSING AND DOSAGE
STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE
INDIGOIDINE should be stored in the original sealed containers protected from light and humidity in a clean place at a temperature between 10 and 30°C. To avoid secondary microbial contamination, following opening, containers should be handled with special care. If stored under the recommended conditions, INDIGOIDINE remains stable for 3 years.
